Housed in a striking former barracks building, complete with turrets and pointed roofs, Portsmouth City Museum explores different facets of Portsmouth’s rich and varied history – from the everyday to moments when the city has played its role in national and international events. The city’s art and design collections are also showcased here.
The museum provides an excellent introduction to the city for visitors, with permanent exhibitions covering topics from Sherlock Holmes to football, alongside a changing events and temporary exhibition programme. The museum is also home to a new Visitor Information point, where visitors can find out about the city’s wider cultural offerings as well as book accommodation and tickets to the city’s other cultural venues and attractions.
There’s also a cafe for refreshments, and large, formal, south-facing gardens for a leisurely stroll, home to events throughout the summer season.
